People of all ages, toddlers to age 100 and beyond, will enjoy this reflective and rousing concert! Tunes to be played include some perennial favorites such as Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever March” and “Armed Forces on Parade,” honoring our veterans. A new-to-the-band piano work by Charlotte Blake set for band by Frank Winterbottom called “That Tired Rag,” will also be performed. The audience will also be treated to works by composers with deep ties to Tallahassee, including former Florida State University Professor Charles “Charlie” Carter’s “State Fair Suite” and former FSU Marching Chief and retired United States Air Force Band arranger and composer Robert “Bob” Thurston’s “On Behalf of a Grateful Nation.” These are just some of the delightful and meaningful tunes you will hear at the concert as we celebrate Independence Day!

We welcome you to join us in the audience on Saturday, July 2, 2022 at 10 AM at Westminster Oaks Retirement Community’s Maguire Center, 4449 Meandering Way, Tallahassee, FL 32308. Come early to find parking and to claim your seat!

Capital City Band of Tallahassee Community College returned to Tallahassee Senior Center for annual summer concert on June 20, 2022

Capital City Band of Tallahassee Community College played a summer-themed concert at the Tallahassee Senior Center on Monday, June 20, 2022 at 7:00 PM.

Capital City Band of Tallahassee Community College, under the direction of TCC Director of Bands, Lisa M. Foltz, was pleased to play a concert at the Tallahassee Senior Center, 1400 N. Monroe Street, Tallahassee, Florida, on Monday, June 20, 2022. While the Band returned to the Senior Center for it’s annual holiday concert in December 2021, both the Band and Tallahassee Senior Center staff were elated for the reinstatement of the summer concert, following a two-year hiatus, 2020-2021.

Band members wore blue and gold, Tallahassee Community College’s colors, to celebrate fifty years of being “on the campus” and part of Tallahassee Community College. “Juneteenth” was also honored and remembered, on what was the official federal holiday of the same.

Repertoire played by the Band included John Philip Sousa’s ”I’ve Made My Plans for the Summer” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever (March),” Bob Thurston’s ”On Behalf of a Grateful Nation,” John Cacavas’ ”March of the Golden Brass,” Charles Carter’s ”State Fair Suite,” Charlotte Blake & Frank Winterbottom’s ”That Tired Rag,” a Patriotic Sing-Along, and more! At least two composers, Bob Thurston and Charles “Charlie” Carter have deep ties to Tallahassee. Thurston was also a composition student of Carter at Florida State University.

Donations were accepted at the door in support of Tallahassee Senior Center Services, whose mission is to offer programs, activities, and opportunities designed to encourage active living, optimal aging, and social fitness for independent adults age 50+. For more information on the Senior Center, activities and events, take a tour, call 850-891-4000 or visit Talgov.com/Seniors.

An enthusiastic audience appreciated the Band’s performance and many comments were received following the concert regarding favorite selections that the Band played. One patron commented that she vividly visualized each scene as she listened to the movements of “State Fair Suite.”

Capital City Band of Tallahassee Community College looks forward to our next concert at the Tallahassee Senior Center, which will be on Monday, December 5, 2022 at 7 PM. Please mark your calendars and “save the date”!

TCC Jazz Band is back!

Join us for our return to Turner Auditorium on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at 7:00 PM!

In March 2020, sounds of jazz in the Tallahassee Community College Band Room fell silent. Those sounds, stunted by distance and lagging bandwidth, would only later be revived in individuals’ living rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens as TCC Jazz Band rehearsed over Zoom for the entire 2020-2021 academic year. Then, on September 25, 2021, the band joyfully regathered in the Band Room for the first in-person rehearsal in over 18 months.

The last two months have been a time of rebuilding…a time of renewal and of revival. We’re still mourning the loss of two of our longtime friends and colleagues and the wife of one of our longtime members. (These losses were not related to band rehearsals.) We’ve welcomed five new members and one former member. We’ve practiced tunes we had only previously worked week after week utilizing keyboard accompaniment, instrumental recordings, and occasionally an individual player “unmuted,” over Zoom. We’ve brought back tunes we had nearly-concert ready when we were sent home 18 months ago. We’ve persevered. We’ve persisted. We’ve adjusted, and grown. And, the band is ready. We are gratefully ready to perform for you.

Be part of our community as we return to Turner Auditorium on Wednesday, October 18, 2021 at 7 PM. We need you, and we think you’ll find you needed us…and music…live music that feeds the soul and lifts your spirit.

Turner Auditorium is located at Tallahassee Community College in the Fine and Performing Arts Center (FPAC), which is between the Administration Building and the Communications and Humanities Building, 444 Appleyard Drive, Tallahassee, Florida, 32304; Free and ample parking is available in front of the FPAC. The concert is free for everyone to attend.

Our family-friendly concert will last about an hour.

Eagles Rise! Tallahassee Community College students Marcus Polzer (Baritone Saxophone) and Kate Curley (Trumpet) are two of the newest members of TCC Jazz Band.

All three were standout musicians in their high-school jazz bands and in other ensembles.
